47% of students are unsure about their careers post-college
46% of employees contemplating a career change

There is a clear need for tools that make exploring new career paths more engaging and accessible. Let's consider what is common among young adults and adults. Yes, that's right - social media! But what else? Yep, dating apps! The rise and ease found in dating apps has become super popular.

Traditional career exploration tools or just searching the web can be overwhelming and uninspiring, often failing to engage users or provide the personalized insights they need. Users lack a simple, engaging way to explore potential career paths and learn about different occupations, leading to uncertainty and dissatisfaction in their career decisions.

Project

Problem

Jobstr offers a new way to explore careers by combining the swipe-based interaction of dating apps with in-depth career information. Users can swipe through fields of interest, match occupations, and even chat with AI to receive career information. The app aims to make career exploration more intuitive, engaging, and tailored to individual interests.

Competitor analysis

To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the support offers that other companies give to users, my focus was on both competitors and non-competitors.

Question 3:

What do customers think about the features they have? What features do they feel are missing?

Question 2:

Are there any popular features that are consistently seen in other apps?

Question 1:

What do successful location-based apps offer, and how can we identify any gaps that we could fill?

I conducted an analysis of different dating apps and professional platforms such as LinkedIn to find out the ways in which users explore career opportunities. This research was important in shaping the user experience in Jobstr, ensuring that the app not only keeps users engaged but also offers essential information to help them make well-informed career choices.

Reflection

In my role as the team's UX designer, I was responsible for analyzing existing apps and their designs to create our own user experience. I focused on designing navigation icons, selecting four to keep the interface simple and in line with successful apps. These icons represented the core features of our app, ensuring a user-friendly experience.

I also collaborated with another designer to develop the app's screens, which we presented to judges at a hackathon. This experience emphasized the importance of working closely with engineers and understanding the coding restrictions they faced. It taught me to creatively design around these limitations while still achieving the desired user experience.

Working on the Jobstr project was one of my very first experiences in UX design & Product Deisgn. It taught me how to navigate a fast-paced, high-pressure environment and adapt quickly to new challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was identifying a core user problem within a tight 48-hour timeframe. This experience pushed me to think critically and work efficiently, honing my ability to make quick, informed decisions in a collaborative setting. We ended up winning 1st place CruzHacks ‘24 (Hackathon, Vectara Track).
